MAY – JUNE 2023
For this project, I created a design based on a phrase of advice. Chosen from the book 100 Habits of Successful Graphic Designers, I imparted the wisdom, "work with your neighbors."
The solutions would exist in spaces for designers— such as offices, conventions, and social media networks. Because this advice is for designers and design students, I injected symbolism that designers would pick up on and appreciate.
This project explores visual interpretation of the phrase, possibilities for viewer experience, and conceptual principles of typography.
Process
To begin the process, I sketched ideas for different conceptual directions and different interpretations of the phrase. I didn't want to approach the phrase at face-value. I thought about collaboration between groups of people, teamwork in communities, and cultivation of growth.
Then, I made digital comps of my three strongest directions. I considered different formats, such as animation and print, and which format would help convey my idea the best.
Final Solutions
My final solutions use the idea of collaboration leading to growth. I use the tree root and mycorrhizal network as a metaphor. The collaboration of organisms alike and different can create growth. Like designers, the organisms support each other and work together despite their different functions.
I created a poster as well as short animation for digital platforms.
