MAY – JUNE 2023
In this project, I created a conceptual book wrap illustration and a spot illustration for the book Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.
To illustrate this young-adult fantasy book, I aimed to represent the whimsical and mysterious nature of the story, as well as the power of the main character. It was important to capture the vivid world of imagery Maas has created. I included symbols and references to things that appear throughout the story for readers to spot.
This project delves into using visual techniques such as texture, layering, transparency, silhouette, and lighting. It also explores custom typography and selection of typefaces and color palettes in relation to the content.

Process
In the early stages, I explored the imagery and elements I wanted to include on the cover. I experimented with different angles and perspectives. Because I planned to use silhouette in the illustration, I sketched out how I was going to utilize value to create form and depth in the scene.
In early sketches for the chapter opener page illustration, I explored simple to complex illustrations. I chose a more complex version to encourage reader curiosity by playing on the mysterious elements of the story.
